Apprentice Program & Appointments

How Can I Book an Apprentice Appointment?

You can book an apprenticeship appointment HERE! Please note that we can only provide apprentice piercings for clients 18+.

Once you navigate to our ‘Apprenticeship Program’ page, please scroll down. Under the headline, ‘Get Pierced by a Studs Apprentice’ you will see all studios listed that are currently offering apprenticeship appointments!

If you do not see your local studio listed, keep checking back in! We offer apprenticeship piercings on a rolling basis.

Apprenticeship appointments are always monitored by our most experienced piercing educators, and the appointment will include free piercing services!

What to Expect During an Apprentice Piercing Appointment?

We offer two different types of Apprentice Appointments depending on the placements you are interested in receiving:

Lobe & Helix Piercing Placements (highlighted below in orange):

Lobe (1-3) , Mid-Helix (5) & Helix (6)

Advanced Piercing Placements (highlighted below in purple):

Flat (7), Forward Helix (8), Rook (9), Daith (10), Conch (11) Antitragus (4), Tragus (12), Conch (11) & Industrial Piercings.

You can book your Apprentice Appointment HERE!

After you have made your selections, your piercer and their mentor will take you back to the piercing room!

Please note: Not every placement will work with every ear. Regardless of the appointment type you book, your piercing apprentice + mentor will do a full consultation prior to your appointment, and will work with you to determine the best possible placement.

In the piercing room, you’ll take a seat on one of our piercing beds, while your piercer sanitizes their hands and puts on gloves. Your piercer will then reassess your ears and begin to mark your piercing placement(s) with either a white or purple skin-safe marker. You will have the opportunity to look these over in a mirror to confirm you are happy with each placement!

After you approve the placements, your piercer will instruct you to breathe in and out as they perform the piercing. We have plenty of stress-balls on hand for you to squeeze during this portion of the service!  After the 16 gauge hollow needle is pierced through your ear, your piercer will use a tool called a taper, to gently guide your jewelry into the hole.

Please note that Apprenticeship Appointments are always monitored by our most experienced piercing operations educators.

While we guarantee quality services, piercing appointments may run longer than the allotted 20-minute appointment.

Are Apprentice Piercing Appointments free?

Apprentice appointments include FREE piercing services!

Customers will be required to purchase Studs piercing jewelry at the time of their piercing appointment.

Studio Information

Why does your Meatpacking Studio show as ‘Temporarily Closed’?

Our Meatpacking location is a flagship training Academy, designed to support our next generation of piercers through a hands-on, paid apprenticeship program. Because this Studio operates around scheduled training periods, it is only open for piercing services during select times throughout the year.

When not in session, the Studio may appear as “Temporarily Closed” online — this simply means we are between training cohorts.

Want to know when we’re open next? Sign up for our email list to stay in the loop about upcoming Academy openings!

Are Your Studios ADA Compliant / Accessible?

All of our studios are wheelchair accessible! Studs values inclusivity and accessibility, and our team will work to provide accommodations at the time of your appointment.

Our studios’ entrances vary based on location, as some are located within malls or other designated shopping areas.

How do I get in touch with the studio?

Our team typically responds within 24 hours.

What hours is Studs open?

Our studio hours vary by location! You can look up location specific piercing and shopping hours HERE.

How many piercings can I get at once?

For optimal healing, Studs will perform a maximum of 4 piercings* per person during an appointment.

*As determined by your expert Piercer

If you are looking to get both lobes pierced, this would be considered two piercings! Industrials and Snakebites are also considered two piercings!

Can I get pierced with the same piece of jewelry twice?

We cannot pierce with the same piece of jewelry twice, even if it’s Studs jewelry.

All piercings must be done with new Studs jewelry, as all of our piercing jewelry is pre-sterilized. To minimize risk and optimize healing, you must purchase new Studs piercing jewelry at the start of your appointment to be pierced at Studs.

The cost of our piercing jewelry ranges from $35 – $120+ per earring (all piercing earrings are sold as singles), and you can view our piercing jewelry assortment HERE!

How much time should I wait between piercings? When can I book my next appointment?

You can refer to your Aftercare Card to determine when your piercer recommends you can stop in for your next piercing service. The recommended date will be located on the top right corner of the card, located next to the date of your most recent service.

We suggest waiting until the swelling and soreness from your initial piercings goes away entirely, before booking your next piercing appointment! We also recommend scheduling a Downsize Appointment appointment 6-8 weeks after your initial piercing service to downsize your piercing.

You can learn more about the downsizing process HERE.

What jewelry can I get pierced with? Can I bring my own jewelry or jewelry I purchased online?

For safety and sterility purposes, we only pierce with Studs piercing jewelry purchased at the time of your appointment.

Our piercing jewelry is currently only available in our Studios, but you can view our assortment HERE. Earrings start at $35 and are sold as singles.

When you come in for your appointment, you will consult with a piercer, and we can recommend what pieces will work best for you based on your unique ear anatomy!

All of our piercing jewelry is made of high-quality, implant-grade metals: titanium, 14k or 18k gold, and use titanium flatback labrets. We never pierce with butterfly-back earrings as these are not as safe for the piercing or healing process.

If you purchase fashion jewelry online at Studs.com that you want inserted into fully healed holes, we CAN accommodate that! You can book a jewelry change appointment HERE for this service.

Piercing Practices

What should I expect during my service?

After you have confirmed which jewelry you’d like to receive as well as your placements, your piercer will take you back to the piercing room.

Rest assured, our staff is well-trained to make this experience as quick and painless as possible!

What is a Downsize? When should I Downsize My Piercing?

Downsizing is a term that we use frequently throughout your piercing experience! Think of downsizing as a helpful and recommended step in the continuation of your healing process.

When performing a new piercing, our piercers use a longer labret (or flatback post) to accommodate for swelling and other irritations that can occur during your initial healing period. The act of downsizing your piercing happens after your initial healing period ends.

Once your piercer decides that you are eligible to safely downsize your piercing earring, they will remove the longer labret post on the back of the earring you were initially pierced with, and  insert a shorter labret that has a tighter fit.

The shorter length of labret post will reduce snagging and will be more stationary in your relatively new piercing channel, making way for a healthier piercing with less healing complications. This new labret post will stay in for the remainder of your healing process and can be left in indefinitely unless you need to accommodate for swelling in the future, if any irritation occurs.

For all *flatback downsizing appointments, we do not require the purchase of new jewelry, however, the service will incur a service fee of $10 per downsize. Please note, your piercer will completely remove your current jewelry in order to downsize the post during your downsize appointment!

We highly recommend you keep your longer labret post inserted for the duration of your initial healing period, and possibly longer, depending on how your body heals! It’s best to not downsize too early, in the case more swelling/irritation occurs.

You can use the following time frames to help determine when you will be ready to stop in for your downsize.

Initial Healing Time Frames:

Lobe: 2-3 months
Stacked Lobes: 2-3 months
Upper Lobe: 2-3 months
Snakebite Midi: 3-4 months
Helix: 3-4 months
Flat Helix: 3-4 months
Forward Helix: 3-4 months
Conch: 3-4 months
Tragus: 3-4 months
Anti-Tragus: 3-4 months
Rook: 3-4 months
Daith: 3-4 months
Industrial: 4-5 months

Every ear heals differently! There is a chance your piercer may not feel your piercing is ready for a downsize just yet during this appointment—if so, they will be sure to let you know what time frame may be best for you to stop back into the studio again! You are welcome to book a Check-Up Appointment at any time to check in on the health of your piercing and ask your piercer any questions you may have!

You can book a Downsizing Appointment HERE after your initial healing time has passed to see if you are ready to be downsized! If you have not reached these initial healing time frames, it is likely that we will be unable to downsize you to a smaller labret post just yet.

Please remember that downsizing your earring does not indicate that your piercing has fully healed just yet. It is important to continue with your aftercare routine to ensure the long term health of your piercing! You can view our Complete Guide to Aftercare HERE

*For all non-flatback downsizing appointments (Ex. Curved Barbell, Industrial Bar or Clicker), your downsize experience will be slightly different! Due to the structure of your piercing earring, we are unable to simply switch out the backing of your earring in order to downsize your jewelry. Instead, we must replace the whole earring with a smaller/shorter one. In order to receive a downsize with this type of jewelry, we do require you to pay for your new earring.

Do you pierce with needles or guns?

We pierce with single-use needles—never guns!

All our piercings are done with a single-use sterilized needle. Needles result in less tissue trauma, shorter healing time, and an overall more hygienic piercing procedure.

All of our materials and jewelry are sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave (sterilizing machine). Your dentist uses the same machine to sterilize instruments between their patients!

All of our piercing jewelry is made of 14k or 18k solid gold, or high-quality, implant-grade titanium. All of our piercing studs come with flatback titanium labrets, and are sold as singles!

What type of piercing do you do? Does Studs do body piercings?

Studs only performs ear piercings at this time!

210520_STUDS_Illustration_Ear-01.png

Studs piercers can perform any of the following piercing placements, and will help you determine the best placements for your individual ear anatomy!

Do You Offer Re-Piercings?

Yes, we absolutely do re-piercings!

Please schedule a piercing appointment for this service. At the start of your appointment, you will have a consultation with your piercer, who will let you know if the area is ready to be re-pierced or if the placement of your holes will have to be slightly adjusted in order for you to heal properly.

In some cases, a re-pierce is not needed, and our piercer will gently stretch the hole open to an appropriate size, and this would be considered a Jewelry Change Appointment!

What are health conditions that may complicate my piercing?

If you have certain health conditions such as diabetes, if you are on blood thinners, anticoagulants, antibiotics, or other medications, or if you have had staph infections, MRSA, or other frequent or difficult-to-treat infections, or if you have a history of skin diseases or sensitivities, please consult with your physician prior to having your ears pierced.

If you are pregnant, have a blood-borne disease which could be transmitted by an accidental needle stick, such as HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or have any conditions that may cause you to faint, including heart conditions, hemophilia, low blood pressure, or anemia, you cannot be pierced at Studs.

We remind you to always thoroughly review the Studs Piercing Terms, Waiver and Consent Form that you’re required to sign before getting pierced!

Aftercare

How Do I Clean My Piercing?

Taking proper care of your piercing and performing your aftercare routine diligently is key for optimal healing and the long term health of your piercing!

To Clean Your Piercing:

  • Always begin with thoroughly washing your hands. Other than to clean your piercing, avoid touching it as much as possible. Do NOT rotate or twist your piercing, and do NOT remove your jewelry to clean it!
    • We do not recommend removing your jewelry to clean your piercing as new piercing holes can close sooner than you would expect—sometimes within minutes! Rest assured, you can still clean your piercing site just as well without having to remove the jewelry
    • Because you are pierced with high quality jewelry, there is no need to remove the jewelry for cleaning, as the material is durable enough to remain in the piercing channel throughout the entire length of the healing process!
  • Spray the front and back of your piercing with sterile saline solution, 2 times a day, 3 times a day at most! Spraying your piercing with saline more than 3x daily will not necessarily lead to a faster, more effective healing time frame– over cleaning may actually extend the healing process!
    • For certain piercings, particularly piercings located on the outer edge of the ear (such as lobes or helix piercings), it may be easier to apply using a clean non-woven gauze saturated with saline solution
    • You can do so by applying the non-woven gauze with saline solution by gently wrapping the pierced site, allowing the front and back of the piercing to “soak.”
  • If your piercer suggests using soap, gently lather around the piercing and rinse as needed
    • Be sure to avoid using harsh soaps, or soaps with dyes or fragrances! Antibacterial soap can lead to a drying effect around the pierce site, making it difficult for your body to heal!
  • Rinse the pierce sites (front and back) and surrounding area with water as needed to remove cleaning solution residue
    • Moving or rotating jewelry is not necessary during cleaning or rinsing
  • Dry the area by gently patting with clean, disposable paper products
    • Cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry causing injury—so we suggest avoiding these!

Other Healing Tips:

  • We recommend that you avoid swimming after you get pierced for at least 2 weeks. No pools, baths, oceans, etc.—Showering is OK! Generally, the longer you wait before hitting the beach again after your piercing, the better.
    • Exposing a fresh piercing to a (contaminated) body of water can cause irritation and in some cases, lead to infection. The safest bet is to wait as long as you can before fully submerging your piercing in water!
  • Sleeping on your piercing while it heals will cause irritation and extra swelling. We suggest sleeping with a travel pillow for ultimate comfort!
    • It is also a good idea to cover the travel pillow with a freshly laundered, cotton t-shirt every night to ensure any surface your new piercing comes in contact with is clean!
  • Watch out for towels, scarves, and hair—they can snag and pull out your stud!
  • Don’t freak—bleeding, swelling, tenderness, itching, soreness, bruises, and crusties are normal reactions to the healing process!

For more in-depth information regarding aftercare, you can refer to our (Ear)ducation Guide HERE!

If you have any further questions or concerns about how to clean your piercing, or the piercing healing process in general, please contact heystud@studs.com 🙂

**If you experience any symptoms outside of those listed above, we recommend checking in with your doctor.

How long will my piercing take to heal?

Healing is subjective and is dependent on factors such as your overall health, sleep and stress levels, and your aftercare regimen!

Typically, ear lobe piercings take around 4-6 months, while upper or inner ear piercings take between 6-12+ months to fully heal.

You’ll know your ear is healed once any discharge, swelling, redness, flaking, or soreness stops. In general, your piercing should continue to feel better with time and a consistent aftercare routine!

You can use the following time frames to help determine when your piercing may be fully healed:

Full Healing Time Frames*

Lobe: 4-6+ months
Stacked Lobes: 4-6+ months
Upper Lobe: 4-6+ months
Snakebite Midi: 6-9+ months
Helix: 6-9+ months
Flat Helix: 6-9+ months
Forward Helix: 6-9+ months
Conch: 6-9+ months
Tragus: 6-9+ months
Anti-Tragus: 8 months – 12+ months
Rook: 8 months – 12+ months
Daith: 8 months – 12+ months
Industrial: 8 months – 12+ months

*Your piercing is fully healed, both on the outside and the inside. *At this point, you may change your jewelry to hoops and fashion styles of jewelry.

What should I expect during the healing process?

Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, and/or bruising.

During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.

Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate.

A piercing might seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the outside in, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. Be patient, and keep cleaning throughout the entire initial healing period!

Even healed piercings that you have had for years can shrink or close in minutes! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, keep jewelry in—do not leave the hole empty.

I think there might be something wrong with my piercing. What should I do?

It’s totally normal to experience slight bleeding, “crusties” (or dead skin cells), swelling, tenderness, itching, bruising, or soreness. These symptoms will typically only last a few weeks, so don’t worry!

For a complete guide on ear piercing aftercare, please visit our (Ear)ducation Hub.

How do I remove my jewelry once it’s healed?

The way you remove the earring depends on the type of jewelry you were pierced with!

The majority of our piercing jewelry is push-pin, but if you are unsure what type of earring you have, feel free to email us for help!

Please read our full guide to removing different types of piercing jewelry on our (Ear)ducation hub HERE.
